This study provides an overview of the lightning strike phenomenon, the lightning damage to CFRP structures and the current lightning protection solutions. Advanced materials like polymer-based nano-composites or graphene-reinforced composites are promising candidates for lightweight, multifunctional protection measures, but still with limited. Coatings and thin conductive overlays for protecting boron fiber reinforced plastics and graphite fiber reinforced plastics from structural damage by simulated lightning strikes were investigated. Laboratory tests were made in which test panels, with and without coatings, were exposed to currents as high as , amperes.
graphite with the formation of so-called graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). GICs are perfect model structures to study the physical properties of two-dimensional systems. Lightning can strike twice. In the case of aircraft, it can strike multiple times. On planes built from highly conductive aluminum, even the worst-case ,ampere jolt can be quickly conducted away.
But for craft made with less-conductive carbon fiber composites or nonconductive fiberglass, lightning strike protection (LSP) is critical. Effect of Lightning Strike on Bromine Intercalated Graphite Fiber / Epoxy Composites James R.

Chula Vista, California SUMMARY. This study examined the effects of matrix resin properties on the lightning strike damage behavior exhibited by CFRP.
Lightning strike damage was investigated experimentally for cross-ply carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CF/epoxy), bismaleimide (CF/BMI), and polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK). The following results were obtained.
(1)Cited by: The understanding of lightning strike damage mechanisms of fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites (PMCs) is of great significance in the design and development of lightning strike protection.
The LSP fabric used is ECC's 3K carbon, 2x2 twill fabric with aluminum threads (Style ). The epoxy resin reportedly helps to prevent galvanic corrosion between the aluminum mesh and carbon fiber composites.
The aircraft's lightning protection was tested by Culham Lightning Ltd. (Abingdon, Oxfordshire, U.K.). Artificial lightning strike test is the direct but expensive way to study the lightning strike protection effect and damage mechanism [, ].
Hirano et al. conducted artificial lightning strike tests on graphite/epoxy composite laminates to study the evolution of lightning strike damage. Results indicated that the fiber damage area and depth. In this paper, a new method that has shown significant potential to characterize lightning strikes damage which is couple with dynamic mechanical analysis.
The composite samples used in this work are based on carbon fiber/bismaleimide system. The analysis of the dynamic mechanical data demonstrate the glass transition temperature of the composites increased as a function of increasing.
Abstract. The numerical model of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with electrically modified interlayers subjected to lightning strike is constructed through finite element simulation, in which both intra-laminar and inter-laminar lightning damages are considered by means of coupled electrical-thermal-pyrolytic analysis method.
Composite materials for use in lightning strike protection are composed of at least one layer of the highly conducting lightweight hybrid material and at least one layer of traditional composite materials.

The resistivity of bromine intercalated graphite fibers has been shown to vary with both the diameter and the length of the fibers. This is due to bromine depletion from the fiber surface.

The effect of lightning on a perforated carbon fiber composite is examined in this technical note. This perforated material has been considered for use on an aircraft engine nacelle to achieve hybrid laminar flow.
The work was carried out under a European Commission program HYLDA (Hybrid Laminar Flow Demonstration on Aircraft). In order to analyze the lightning strike ablation damage characteristic of composite laminate with fastener, based on the energy-balance relationship in lightning strike, mathematical analysis model of ablation damage of composite laminate with fastener was constructed.
